Testosterone unit converter
Convert testosterone results between UK and US units. For total testosterone, multiply nmol/L by 28.84 to get ng/dL. For free testosterone, multiply pmol/L by 0.2884 to get pg/mL. Enter your result below to convert it instantly and see where it sits on UK guideline bands.
How do you convert testosterone units?
The units measure the same thing in different ways: nmol/L counts molecules, ng/dL weighs them. Testosterone's molecular weight (288.4 g/mol) links the two, which gives these factors:
| To convert | Multiply by |
|---|---|
| Total T: nmol/L → ng/dL | 28.84 |
| Total T: ng/dL → nmol/L | 0.0347 |
| Total T: ng/mL → nmol/L | 3.467 |
| Free T: pmol/L → pg/mL | 0.2884 |
| Free T: pg/mL → pmol/L | 3.467 |
| Oestradiol: pmol/L → pg/mL | 0.2724 |
| Oestradiol: pg/mL → pmol/L | 3.671 |
UK testosterone thresholds in both units
These are the British Society for Sexual Medicine (BSSM) bands for a morning total testosterone, shown in both units. A single result never diagnoses anything on its own; see normal testosterone levels.
| nmol/L | ng/dL | UK guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Above 12 | Above ~346 | Normal |
| 8–12 | ~231–346 | Grey zone: free T and symptoms decide |
| Below 8 | Below ~231 | Low (with symptoms) |

How do I convert testosterone from nmol/L to ng/dL?
Multiply nmol/L by 28.84. For example, 12 nmol/L is about 346 ng/dL. To go the other way, multiply ng/dL by 0.0347.
Why do UK and US testosterone results use different units?
UK labs report total testosterone in nanomoles per litre (nmol/L), a count of molecules. US labs use nanograms per decilitre (ng/dL), a weight. The conversion uses testosterone's molecular weight of 288.4 g/mol.
How do I convert free testosterone from pmol/L to pg/mL?
Multiply pmol/L by 0.2884. For example, 225 pmol/L is about 65 pg/mL. Free testosterone is sometimes reported in nmol/L instead: 0.225 nmol/L is the same as 225 pmol/L.
What is a normal testosterone level in ng/dL?
UK guidelines treat a morning total testosterone above 12 nmol/L (about 346 ng/dL) as normal, 8–12 nmol/L (about 230–346 ng/dL) as a grey zone, and below 8 nmol/L (about 230 ng/dL) with symptoms as low.
